Getting around

A rental car is essential for Timanfaya and Mirador del Río. Buses reach the Cactus Garden and the Casa del Campesino.

Best time

Timanfaya: before 9am or after 3pm to avoid queues. Jameos: from 4pm for fewer people and better light.

Accessibility

Timanfaya and the Cactus Garden have good accessibility. Cueva de los Verdes and Jameos del Agua are difficult for wheelchairs.

North of the island

Jameos del Agua

Manrique's first and most emblematic intervention. A "jameo" is the cavity created when the roof of a volcanic tube collapses. The site was used as a rubble dump before Manrique transformed it into a sanctuary.

The complex includes an underground lake of crystal-clear water fed by seawater filtration, an organically shaped pool — purely aesthetic, not for swimming — surrounded by lush vegetation, and a natural auditorium seating 500, carved into a volcanic bubble.

The Jameíto (Munidopsis polymorpha)

The lake is home to the island's most famous crustacean: a blind albino crab, found only in this spot. It is extremely fragile — it can die from the oxidation of a single coin thrown into the water. Please do not throw objects into the lake.

North of the island

Cueva de los Verdes

In the same volcanic tube of the Corona Volcano, but in an upper section, the Cueva de los Verdes is pure geology dramatised by light. Historically it was the refuge where the islanders hid during pirate raids, making use of the tunnel's complexity.

Jesús Soto, a close collaborator of Manrique, adapted the space in the 1960s with lighting that does not reveal the whole space but plays with shadows to accentuate the volumes of the lava and the ochre, red and green colours of the minerals.

The Secret of the Cave

At the end of the route, what looks like a bottomless abyss is in fact a lake of still water that mirrors the ceiling with perfect precision. An optical illusion that has fooled generations of visitors.

Centre-south · National Park

Fire Mountains — Timanfaya

Timanfaya National Park covers 51 km² of the direct result of the 1730–1736 eruptions. A landscape often described as "Martian": the absence of vegetation, the roughness of the lava and the palette of reds, ochres and blacks create an environment of planetary impact.

The visit to the heart of the park is by official coach only. The Route of the Volcanoes is a 14 km road laid out by Manrique and Soto that follows the topography to offer dramatic perspectives.

Islote de Hilario

At 10 cm: 100°C. At 10 m: 600°C. Instant geysers are demonstrated with water, and gorse bushes catch fire on their own.

El Diablo Restaurant

Meat is cooked directly over the volcanic heat, without gas or electricity. A restaurant unique in the world.

North · 400m high

Mirador del Río

Considered Manrique's masterpiece of landscape integration. Set on the summit of the Risco de Famara, 400 metres above the sea, the building is almost imperceptible from the outside: a skin of volcanic stone covers the structure, imitating the texture of the cliff.

Entering along a winding corridor designed to build suspense, the visitor comes upon two great vaulted spaces and enormous windows — the "eyes of the viewpoint" — that frame a breathtaking view of the Chinijo Archipelago: La Graciosa, Montaña Clara and Alegranza.

Tip: Visit on clear days. The low northern clouds (the "donkey's belly") can completely hide the views of La Graciosa.

Cactus Garden

Manrique's last great work (1990). A former ash quarry transformed into an amphitheatre-shaped botanical garden with more than 1,400 species of cactus. Crowned by the last restored gofio windmill on the island.

Casa-Museo del Campesino

A tribute to the island's farmers. The sculpture "Fertility" (15 m tall, built from ships' water tanks) presides over the central junction. Living workshops of pottery, basketry and embroidery.

MIAC — Castillo de San José

The 18th-century military fortress restored by Manrique in 1976 as the International Museum of Contemporary Art. Works by Tàpies, Miró, Millares and Manrique himself. Panoramic restaurant with views over the harbour.
